Wordless Wednesday or not so wordless.......

I cant help it! He is so darn cute!! I love him...

Word for the Day *Ü*

Today in my in box... I had a note from my friend Darcy... you know... that adorable woman with the 3 adorable boyrbarians?? *Ü*

She came upon the word for today from Websters dictionary..... and today's word reminded her of little ole me... ( blushing and foot swirling on the ground and only my toe touching... can you picture it??)

See for about 7- 8 years... I have had the nickname Wahine. It was given to me by my friends Vince and Shannon when our families went on a 2 + week surfing vacation traveling down highway 101 following Washington's coast to Oregon camping and surfing along the way. We found a sticker for my van that said "Wave Wahine" and ever since then, I was Wahine. My husband Dan is Boardman... shocking isn't it??Our friend Vince became Spalty dog.... *Ü* and Shannon is Tiki....

I think we need to go to Hawaii or something... Maybe Coast Rica!! Waves are good... waters warm.... oops sidetracked sorry...

Back to my friend Darcy..... she sent me and email that had the page to Websters dictionary's word for the day in it. *Ü* and guess what it was??? Yup... Wahine...

wahine

\wah-HEE-nee\

noun

Meaning

1 : a Polynesian woman
*2 : a female surfer

Example Sentence

“Make some serious waves this summer by learning to surf! Ridin' the swells is fab exercise and, well, what's cooler than a wahine girl?” (Girls’ Life, June 2005)

Did you know?

The word “wahine” came into English in the late 18th century from Maori, the language of a Polynesian people native to New Zealand; it was originally used for a Maori woman, especially a wife. The word is also used for a woman in Hawaiian and Tahitian, though spelled “vahine” in the latter. Enormous waves, which are perfect for surfing, are an attraction of the Polynesian islands. As the surfing culture solidified in the mid-20th century, and as more and more girls and women grabbed their boards, “wahine” took on the new meaning of “female surfer.”

How funny is that??? Im the 2nd defanition by the way.... Never been anywhere where the water is that warm... or if I was.. I was to far inland or up country! *Ü*

Summer 08 with the Basque

Some of this information is a re-post from last year. Its good to remember...

Have you herd of Basque Country? I never did. Not until about 4 years ago. The first time I herd of Basque Country or Basque people , was at my church. Basque Country is located in between Spain and France. Basque are considered an un reached people group.

We have a student program at our church where students from different parts of Basque Country come and live with us for 1 month. The hope is to learn better English. Our hope is to be a light and USA family to them.

Here is Imonal. He is 17 years old and from Bergara. This is a picture from last year. He is with us again. I think this will be his last year.... This makes us all sad... but we hope to continue our relationship with him.

He arrived on June 27th and will be going home on July 27th. He looked so tired when he got off the plane. All the kids did. It was a 13 hour flight from Basque to Madrid, from Madrid to Paris from Paris to Chicago and then Chicago to Seattle. The good thing about this is they went through customs in Chicago so we could scoop him up and take him home right away.

It was about 2:30 am when we finally got him home. He was comfortable and excited to see the animals.... plus he had not met little man the kitten yet. He called home and we all went to sleep....

The next morning the Basque students all have an orientation meeting and then a welcome BBQ later in the afternoon. its a lot to have to wake him up so early.... but we tried to let him sleep as much as possible.

The BBQs are always fun, and it helps connect the kids and the family's. We play games with teams... and each family is a team, so we have to work together. Its always a lot of fun. I'm on my sons lap top right now, so soon I will post some pictures of our adventures to date.

We went to the BBQ I just mentioned, took all the students to a Mariners Game (we won) and then had a great 3rd and 4th of July with many other happenings in between.

The kids all leave for camp on Wed, and then Christian and Imanol will be heading down to Oregon for a Young life 9 day camp experience! Lots of fun and many posts to come...

Student day, Mall trip. Imonal showing off his new look!

Free Ocean Unit study
